History

PlayStation 4 was announced unofficially at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas on January 8, 2013 by Sony Home Entertainment Vice President Hiroshi Sakamoto9. According to him, the console will be presented with certainty at E3 2013 or, a little before, in May. “It’s a big secret. But our colleagues at the PlayStation brand are getting ready. I can only say that we are focusing on E3, scheduled for June. The announcement may be made at this time or earlier in May. ยป.

Some specialized websites announced its likely presentation in February 201310, at an exceptional sony convention. The rumors do not stop there since another famous site/magazine certifies the release of the console in 201311.

The existence of the console was officially announced by Sony on February 20, 201312, but the console itself was not disclosed. The presentation focuses on the new dualShock controller model, support from third-party publishers and developers such as Blizzard and Bungie, the presentation of several games, Diablo III, Destiny and Watch Dogs, including the exclusive Killzone: Shadow Fall, the fourth episode of the Killzone series, and inFamous: Second Son. In addition, Knack and DriveClub, two original titles highlighting the features and features of the console are presented12.

The PlayStation 4 was officially unveiled on June 11, 2013 during Sony’s E3 conference. Games and technical details are then presented as well as the design of the console. The Japanese firm announced its position in the face of Microsoft’s xbox one policy, including issues of mandatory connection, blocking of used games and the zoning of the console, saying that this policy would not be its own.13 A few days after this announcement, Microsoft, under pressure from its competitor as well as many critics, decided to cancel these constraints to align itself with the PlayStation 414.

In August 2013, several retailers such as Micromania, FNAC and Amazon declared that the console’s delivery on the day of its release would no longer be guaranteed for new pre-orders15,16. Despite 16 million units produced, this may not be enough to meet demand around the world. Sony announced, however, that additional units will be delivered to sales points on the day of the release. Manufacturers would rather say they are struggling to meet demand than being unable to sell a stock as was the case at the launch of playStation 316.17.

During gamescom 2013, Sony announced that the PlayStation 4 will be released on November 15 in the United States and November 29 in Europe18.

It was during their conference at TGS 2013 that Sony announced that the PlayStation 4 would be released on the Japanese archipelago only on February 22, 201419.

For its launch in Brazil in November 2013, the console is sold for the sum of 1,020 euros (more than three times the price in Europe). This amount is linked to import and tax costs that are between 60% and 70% of the price20.

Design

The original design of the PlayStation 4 is revealed at E3 2013; the hull is in the shape of a parallelogram, or more accurately parallelepiped cut in half in the direction of the width by a trench, or notch, strictly central going all the way around the console, giving the visual impression of two Parallelepipeds aligned and superimposed. In the central snif are the “eat-disc” Blu-ray player, two USB29 ports and the “Power” and “Eject” buttons on the front. The console is black in colour with matte and shiny surfaces separated, in the direction of depth, by a central furrow, also going all the way around the console, from where emanates, on the face of the top, a bar of light, which is white when the console is t lit30, blue when the PS4 is switched on and off and orange in standby mode; the official name of this color is “Jet Black”. The console can be placed vertically or horizontally.30 This aesthetic is the work of a young Japanese designer employed at Sony; the PS4 was designed in-house, the brand having chosen not to use the services of Teiyu Goto, who had so far signed the various models of consoles of the firm30. The console weighs 2.8 kg for dimensions of 275 mm in width, 305 mm in depth and 53 mm in thickness31.

This design will be generalized, and the PS4 models that will succeed the original model will retain the “cut parallelepiped”.
