PlayStation 3 History Models

The PlayStation 3 (officially abbreviated PS3) is a seventh-generation video game console marketed by Sony. It was released on November 11, 2006 in Japan, November 17, 2006 in North America and March 23, 2007 in Europe. It succeeds the PlayStation 2 (which itself succeeded the PlayStation), and competes with Microsoft’s Xbox 360 as well as Nintendo’s Wii.

Designed as a digital entertainment center, the PlayStation 3 is part of the era of high-definition television by integrating a Blu-ray player and HDMI connectivity. The console has a hard drive, a web browser and acts as a media center supporting different types of multimedia format. It offers extended connectivity with PlayStation Portable via Wi-Fi. Versions prior to the “Slim” models launched at the end of August 2009 are compatible with Linux distributions. The BD-Live and the BD-java are added to firmware 2.15, and a part to launch homebrew is removed with version 2.50. Its online service, PlayStation Network, allows you to network for free, download games, demos, trailers and provide access to various communication services. The controller is wireless and carries a motion detection system.

In December 2009, more than 500 titles were released on the console.

In September 2010, firmware 3.50 added the ability to play 3D Blu-ray movies and activate 3D on compatible PS3 games. Until June 29, 2010, Sony sold its console at a loss and made profits only on sales of games and accessories6.

In 2017, Sony announced the end of production of the PlayStation 37, the console had more than 87 million copies sold.


Sony officially unveiled the PlayStation 3 to the public in May 2005 at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles8. The launch plans were announced a year later, at E3 2006. A global release was planned a few months later: November 11, 2006 in Japan and November 17, 2006 in North America and Europe. In September 2006, however, the European release was officially postponed until March 2007 due to a delay in the production of blue lasers from the Blu-ray player. As a result, the number of consoles proposed for launch day is reduced to 80,000 units for Japan and to less than 200,000 units for North America, the proposed consoles were 60GB and 20GB models. . According to the Media Create9 Institute, 81,639 PlayStation 3 copies were sold in 24 hours in Japan. The limited quantities of consoles have created opportunism. Observations suggest that businessmen paid Chinese nationals to buy consoles without games in order to resell them at a high price.10 In the United States, isolated acts of violence were reported while the console was traded between $1,000 and $3,000 on the eBay11 website.

The PlayStation 3 was released in Europe on March 23, 2007 only in a 60GB version, with the 20GB version selling little in Japan and North America. Unlike the Japanese and American releases, the quantities distributed were sufficient to meet demandnote 2. In France, despite a difficult launch party in Paris12, 78,000 consoles are sold in two days in the territory13. The best sales were made in The Uk with 173,000 machines sold, a record for a home console13. At the London launch party, the first 100 PS3 buyers also received a 46-inch (116-centimetre) HDTV and were taken home by taxi14. In total, this represents 250,000 pounds (370,000 euros) spent by Sony15. The Blu-ray Movie Casino Royale was offered to the first 500,000 buyers to register their console on PlayStation Network16.

On the day of the launch of the console, 5 Blu-ray games were available in Japan, 12 in the United States and 24 in Europe, plus a few downloadable games. The most prominent games at the launches were Resistance: Fall of Man, MotorStorm, Virtua Fighter 5, Virtua Tennis 3, Ridge Racer 7 or Formula One Championship Edition. The best-selling sales were made by Resistance: Fall of Man, which sold more than 2 million copies17. Total console sales amounted to 1.7 million consoles at the end of 2006, 10.4 million at the end of 2007, 21.1 million at the end of 200818 and 50 million on April 15, 201119. In France, sales amounted to 3 million units on March 18, 2011


The console was available in two configurations at launch21 with the 60GB and 20GB models in 2006. In 2007, the 40GB and 80GB models gradually replaced them. A 160GB model for users looking for superior storage space was also released in 2008. Then the “Slim” models, 120GB and 250GB (for packs containing the console and a game), appeared. In September 2010, the 160GB and 320GB models replaced the latter22. At the end of September 2012, Sony released new PlayStation 3 models with a sleeby, smaller design and a 500GB hard drive. Hard drive-free models with 12GB flash memory were launched in Europe in October 2012, as well as models with 250GB of hard drive, exclusive to NTSC23 versions.
